Scientific production on raised beaches in the South Shetland Islands (Maritime Antarctica)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Raised beach ridges in polar environments are one of the best evidence of relative sea-level (RSL) change. In the South Shetland Islands (Maritime Antarctica), such landforms are particularly abundant, having been studied at different periods, using different methods and through different perspectives. This study aims to compile and categorize the scientific research on raised beaches in the South Shetland Islands. For this purpose, the main repositories of scientific publications were explored, obtaining a definitive list of 65 papers that integrate the general knowledge acquired from the 1960s to the present. During this period, geomorphological studies are the most frequent, reaching a peak in the 2010s, followed by research employing geochronological methods to date uplifted beaches. In the 2000s the amount of data and records increased, reflected in the publication of review articles. In the last decade (2010-2019), papers show a more multidisciplinary approach, integrating various dating techniques, including the periglacial environment and remote sensing. A significant amount of scientific knowledge and data has been collected on raised beaches on the South Shetland Islands, using various approaches, methods and analyses.
