Sport mega-events and air transportation in a geostrategic perspective: analysis of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

Abstract
In the current context of globalization, cities and/or countries compete not only in economic-productive terms, they also tend to consider cultural manifestations of a global order. Among these, the celebration of sporting events stands out, becoming an effective method to gain notoriety in the world and strengthen the image of the host places.
Using a multi-technical methodology based on bibliographic review and the analysis and processing of statistical data from aerial organizations, this research focuses on the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar to analyze its impact on aerial activity.
The results reveal not only the “global effect” on the different study metrics, but especially the commitment decided by the Qatari government in sports diplomacy through the airline (Qatar Airways) – airport (Hamad International) binomial.
