Tourism functionality applied to UNESCO Global Geoparks: the cases of Mixteca Alta (Mexico) and Villuercas-Ibores-Jara (Spain)

Abstract
Despite their rich heritage diversity, UNESCO Global Geoparks have not been the primary focus of tourist functionality studies. Existing studies have predominantly centered on World Heritage Cities and built heritage, with natural resources, particularly geological ones, receiving comparatively less attention due to their recent recognition. This article conducts a tourist functionality study on two distinct geoparks: one in Latin America (Mixteca Alta) and another in Europe (Villuercas-Ibores-Jara). The aim is to highlight geopark management within different global contexts. The methodology utilized involves a comprehensive inventory of the present heritage, identifying the tourist use of each heritage resource along with other indicators relevant to its functionality. The inventory is sourced from various information sources, including data from both geoparks and fieldwork. The results provide an analysis of tourist functionality in two successful geopark instances, each with different management approaches in alignment with their respective tourist realities.
